We received an email today that Overstock’s sample sale site, Eziba is shutting its online doors. As of July 1st, Eziba is no longer, and survived less than a year, as we blogged the opening of Eziba in August of 2010. Some news outlets have speculated that increased competition from other sites is the culprit of Eziba’s quick demise. We feel differently….
The one thing that 99% of the flash sale sites have in common: the ability to invite friends and receive a credit for doing so if they purchase. Eziba never enabled this feature, nor did they have an affiliate program so that bloggers like us could effectively promote them. We truly believe that a large part of the flash sale industry’s success has been this viral feature, the ability for friends to invite friends, post their invite link on Facebook, etc. As the self-proclaimed sample sale site experts, we believe without this feature, these sites could cease to exist. We all like getting deals – but getting that bonus credit now and then makes those deals even sweeter (and makes buyers more likely to shop if they have $10 or $20 of free money sitting in their account!)
Business 101 – sometimes you have to spend money to make money – but Eziba it seems wasn’t willing to do that.
With new flash sale sites popping up daily, do you think this trend will continue and be a success, or will only the strong survive?
