Okay, yes I know this post isn’t about a sample sale, but nonetheless I thought I would share a little bit about me and my life. In an indirect way, I’m starting this journey so that I can shop more for the clothes I REALLY want to buy and wear but currently won’t because I know they won’t look as good on me as they do on the model. *Cough, cough – skinny jeans – cough, cough*
I know I’m not alone when I state that I’d like to lose 10 pounds this year. Okay maybe 15. Damn those holiday goodies! And I keep seeing those damn commercials with Jennifer Hudson looking all svelte and skinny – how did she do that, I had to wonder?! Two of my very good girlfriends joined Weight Watchers in the last 6 months. One of them has lost 25 pounds already and looks amazing, the other has lost weight too, I’m just not sure what her official number is. I started to wonder if there was something to this Weight Watchers Points stuff.
I’m 5’7″, hypoglycemic and have hypothyroidism. Needless to say, I’ve struggled with my weight over the years and its not easy for me to lose due to my various health conditions! For the last several years I’ve tried to stay on a lower-carbohydrate diet because they’ve worked for me in the past, and due to my reactive hypoglycemia, but inevitably after about day 2 of a strict low-carb diet, I fall off the wagon somehow. (Wine anyone?!) And with low-carb, you cannot cheat, like at all, or the diet doesn’t work – in fact you may gain weight. I’ve been constantly struggling to lose 10 pounds or fit into a size or two smaller jeans. I even joined a gym last year and see a personal trainer one day a week which is helping me tone my muscles, but I’m finding I am not losing that much weight – obviously due to my eating habits, since the workouts have been kicking my butt. I’ve always felt that I eat pretty healthy, but I started to question if maybe my portion sizes were out of whack.
Last Tuesday, I decided what the heck – let’s give it a try. I figured I could do a lower-carb version of Weight Watchers if I wanted to. What I really like about Weight Watchers you can eat anything you want – yes anything – nothing is completely off limits. It just has to fit into your “points” for the day or week.
I went online and signed up. You don’t even have to attend meetings these days – it can all be done from the privacy of your computer, or even your iPhone app (which I love). I put in my name, weight, height and told the system how much weight I wanted to lose. In a few minutes, it was determined as to how many “points” I would get each day and how many bonus points each week.
So I started last Tuesday and today is Tuesday. I’ve been on the plan a week and have lost 2.5 pounds already! People following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week. Maybe mine is just water weight since it fell off pretty fast, but I’ll take it either way. I like being able to track what I’m eating – it keeps me from mindlessly nibbling on the wrong things. Now if I nibble, its on strawberries and apple slices, zero points!
Today I had Taco Bell for lunch. Oh yeah – you read that right. The Fresco Chicken Taco and Steak Tacos are low-fat and low in points. Tonight I’m headed to Outback Steakhouse because the steak I want is low in points too. You’ll find lots of popular restaurants in the points tracker, which makes life so much easier! This diet will really open your eyes to what’s in restaurant foods too, because the salad I used to get at Outback was over 30 points, due to a ton of cheese and fatty dressing. Ooops. Lifestyle change!
Because we’re all about saving money and looking fabulous around here – I thought I’d share the link below where you can save a little money if you decide to give Weight Watchers a try.
What diets or lifestyle changes have you tried to lose weight? What worked and what didn’t? Tell us in the comments – I’d love to hear from you.
